I am thankful for a simple and elegant truth: everyone has a story.
The music on this recording is a celebration of my parents, whose stories I continue to learn more about and appreciate each day. My father is from a small village in Switzerland; my mother, a rainy town on the Big Island of Hawai'i. These songs serve as a narrative thread about the challenges of their leaving home, finding one another in New York City, and creating a dwelling of great peace together in an upstate New York hamlet. In the two halves of their lives becoming whole there lies the essence of Hapa, the Hawaiian word for "part," and thus the transliteration of someone of mixed Asian/Caucasian descent.
These are songs about a love beyond boundaries, beyond oneself, and beyond the idea of the world as a closed system defined by its barriers rather than the love we can have, in "part," for one another.
This music is dedicated to Oscar and Rene Schnider, as well as anyone looking to find their story, and in doing so, finding love along the way.
